Some industrial problems are easy to identify. A failed component is obvious, the replacement is known, and the repair is straightforward.
The difficult problems are different. Equipment stops intermittently. A machine works in manual but not automatic. Communications disappear for no apparent reason. A drive faults even though nothing appears wrong with the drive. Instruments give believable but incorrect readings. A process that has operated for years suddenly becomes unreliable.

The Problem Does Not Always Belong to One Trade
An industrial failure may appear to be a PLC problem while the actual cause is a field device, wiring problem, network interruption, mechanical condition, power issue, configuration error, or something happening elsewhere in the process.
BEA troubleshoots across those boundaries. Our field engineers look at how the complete system operates rather than assuming the problem belongs to one particular component.

Finding the Actual Cause
Replacing the component showing the symptom does not necessarily correct the failure. Effective troubleshooting means determining why the system is behaving differently from the way it was designed to operate.
We begin with the symptoms, verify what the equipment is actually doing, and work through the system until the failure makes sense.

PLC & Control Logic
Sequence problems, interlocks, permissives, timers, unexpected machine behavior, I/O faults, program changes, and obsolete controllers.
Electrical Systems
Control power, wiring, relays, contactors, overloads, circuit protection, grounding, field connections, intermittent circuits, and electrical equipment failures.
Instrumentation
Incorrect readings, drifting signals, calibration problems, scaling errors, failed sensors, noisy analog signals, and process measurements.
VFDs & Motor Controls
Drive faults, motor problems, unexpected trips, configuration problems, load conditions, communications, and interaction between the drive and process.
Industrial Networks
EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, Ethernet switches, routing, radios, remote I/O, device communications, intermittent connections, and SCADA.
Process Interaction
Problems where the controls appear to be functioning correctly, but equipment conditions or process behavior are creating the symptom.
When Others Have Already Looked at It
Some of our most challenging service calls begin after maintenance personnel, electricians, equipment manufacturers, programmers, or other contractors have already investigated the problem.
That does not necessarily mean anyone missed something obvious. Difficult industrial failures often cross several systems at once. Each individual component may appear to be operating correctly when examined by itself.
BEA is often brought in when the individual pieces have been checked, but the problem still has not been explained.
Our job is to step back, understand what the system is supposed to do, observe or reproduce the failure when possible, and work through the complete chain until the actual cause can be identified.

✓ We Don't Start by Assuming What Failed
Good troubleshooting starts with evidence.
We verify what the equipment is actually doing, compare that behavior with what the system is supposed to do, and work backward through the controls, electrical system, instrumentation, communications, equipment, and process until the failure makes sense.
The goal is not simply to make the alarm disappear. The goal is to understand why it happened and correct the root cause whenever practical.
Existing Equipment Is Welcome
You do not need a BEA-built control system to call us.
We support existing industrial and municipal equipment from many manufacturers and generations of technology. When practical, we work with what is already installed instead of automatically recommending replacement.
